Abstract Art is a Window to My Soul
Abstract art, once elusive to me, became a poignant medium to express my experiences, especially after understanding my Grandma Susan’s deep appreciation for it. LLiving with albinism and low vision, I often struggle to focus on a fixed point, and this collection is an extension of that experience. The chaotic nature of the artwork mirrors my internal state and the challenges I face with my vision, offering an intimate glimpse into how I perceive and feel the world around me.
Each piece is created intuitively, with no edits or erasures, transforming the artwork into a raw diary of my emotional journey. The interplay of ink and organic gold waves represents the all-encompassing nature of my grief and the peace found in the reunion of my grandparents. This collection not only documents my process of mourning but also celebrates the enduring bond and love that transcends loss.

Icarus
I began this drawing a day before my grandfather was admitted to the hospital of a final time. At this point, hopes were high. We all thought that a return home was possible. We had already discussed at home care and recovery. He was diagnosed with pneumonia and transferred to the hospital the next day.

Positive
This drawing was created in its entirety at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. My mom was diagnosed with BRCA 2 on February 14, 2024. The day before my grandpa was admitted to the hospital for the final time. This drawing helped me process my mom’s diagnosis while sitting in the waiting room.
BRCA is hereditary. Since the creation of this piece, I have also been diagnosed with the gene. In all of this, the silver lining is that my mom’s diagnosis and my own, allow us to be proactive about our health.
